A beach with fine golden sand on the azure Adriatic Sea, in the heart of the most famous Riviera in Europe, this is the evocative visiting card for San Mauro Mare.
The small town of San Mauro Mare rises on the Adriatic Coast between Cesenatico and Rimini. Along the seafront the town has grown through an increase in tourism, with hotels, beach establishments, sporting areas designed mainly for young people and families with children and who come to this resort to find quiet and relaxing holidays with sunshine and the sea.
Between kiosks selling piadinas which are open day and night and have an irresistible perfume there local cheeses which cannot be found elsewhere such as acquaquerone, raveggiolo or formaggio di fossa, fish that is always fresh every day, hand rolled pasta, excellent wines, stopping to eat is one of the best moments of a holiday in San Mauro Mare.The best thing however, and you will notice this, is that for the Sammaurese, as is the case for all Romagnoli, the table in first and foremost a way of spending time together. If possible celebrating too: an accordion is sufficient and nobody will deny themselves a waltz. The main dish is certainly fish. Blue fish caught off the 100 km. of coast. Squid, cuttlefish, soles, prawns, squill fishangler fish, pilchards and clams. Cooked in every way possible: from local rustic fashion to steaming broth or a golden mixed fry.
If you eat well with us, drink is certainly nothing less. The famous Romagna hills which are wonderful balconies overlooking the sea, produce various types of Doc and even Docg wine: the famous Albana di Romagna. During the holiday you can therefore taste a Sangiovese red with its delicate bouquet reminiscent of violet, Cagnina with a sweet taste, the sparkling Fortana with a dry and a sweetish flavour and Merlot with a slightly herbal bouquet and a dry and harmonious aroma. Then there are Trebbiano, perfect with fish or meat that is not too strong, Pagadebit with its characteristic fragrance of hawthorn, dry and sweetish, even sparkling it is so wonderful for example with piadina and salame.The centre, San Mauro Pascoli, is famous most of all for having been the birthplace of the poet Giovanni Pascoli. The documented origins of the town date back to 1191 when it was named for the first time as "Fundum Sancti Mauri" and then in 1371 as "Villa Sancti Mauri"; the name comes from there being in the 12th century a church dedicated to the bishop of Cesena with the same name.
From the 17th century to the middle of the 19th, the princes of Torlonia founded here one of the finest agricultural settlements of Romagna and event today the imposing structures of that wonderful farm, now called "La Torre" and cuurently being restored, can be seen.In 1932 the name of San Mauro di Romagna was changed by a Royal Decree to "San Mauro Pascoli" in honour of the great poet Giovanni Pascoli (1855-1912).
Almost completely destroyed during the second World War, the town was rapidly rebuilt thanks to the hard work of its inhabitants and has again become an important agricultural centre and above all a famous footwear centre: shoes and leather goods produced here are trendsetting all over the world.
In the 1960s and the "economic miracle" a truly new chapter began in the history of the town. The shoemakers with their ides, their insights and above all courage in taking risks, in a very short time allowed San Mauro Pascoli to reach the forefront in the world of shoemaking. The firms expanded, the working environments were modernised and many firms become true industries.
Alongside the shoe factories subsidiary activities arose specialising in the manufacture of semi-finished products (heels, uppers, mid-soles etc.) Today San Mauro Pascoli is an important shoe making centre and here many of the best known brands in fashions shoes have their headquarters; Pollini, Vicini, Baldinini, Casadei, Sergio Rossi which are outstanding for the high quality of their products and styling that is known and admired all over the world.
